Office of International Cooperation and Exchange Conducts Thematic Research Visit to the School of Economics

On the morning of April 22, Liu Xiaobing, Deputy Director of the Office of International Cooperation and Exchange, and Xiao Shimeng, Section Chief, visited the School of Economics to conduct a thematic research visit. Attending the meeting were Yuan Cuiping, Deputy Party Secretary of the School of Economics; Li Guomin, Vice Dean; Guo Yunyun, Director of the Academic Affairs Office; and Wan Jingyi, Secretary of the Youth League Committee. The two sides held a thematic work exchange meeting focusing on core issues such as “cultivating short-term overseas programs,” “enhancing the quality and upgrading Sino-foreign cooperative education programs,” and “establishing mechanisms for international exchange among faculty and students.” This research initiative serves as a concrete action to implement the university’s educational campaign on “establishing and practicing a correct view of political achievements,” as well as a key preparatory step ahead of the Ministry of Education’s new round of evaluations on Sino-foreign cooperative education programs. It aims to adopt a problem-oriented approach, strengthen collaborative pathways, improve institutional safeguards, and systematically enhance the School of Economics’ international education standards and governance capabilities.

At the meeting, Deputy Director Liu Xiaobing first provided an overview of the key project that had already passed the university-level review—the St. Petersburg Summer Study Program. This project has been approved for special funding, with both the funding level and the scale of student participation setting new records for short-term university programs in recent years, reflecting the university’s high regard and strategic support for the School of Economics’ Sino-foreign cooperative education initiatives. Deputy Director Liu Xiaobing emphasized that this project is by no means a mere “study tour,” but rather carries the dual mission of “nurturing talent” and “laying a foundation.” On the one hand, the overseas learning experience effectively broadens student s’ global perspectives and hones their cross-cultural competencies; on the other hand—and more crucially—it lays a solid psychological foundation, builds adaptability, and stimulates intrinsic motivation for subsequent “3+1” long-term exchange programs.

Deputy Party Secretary Yuan Cuiping noted that students currently show little enthusiasm for exchange programs in Russia. The core issue widely cited is a rigid scheduling conflict between the “one-year study abroad” period and critical milestones such as graduate school entrance exams, civil service exams, and fall recruitment, resulting in academic and career pressures diminishing the value of the international experience.

In response to this issue, both parties have agreed on a unified approach, focusing on two key areas for optimization and improvement: First, coordinating efforts between the Academic Affairs Office and partner institutions in Russia to scientifically optimize the overseas study schedule for the “3+1” program, aligning it with students’ overall academic development while ensuring compliance with relevant assessment requirements from higher authorities; Second, building on the existing foundation of Sino-foreign cooperative education, we will accelerate negotiations to implement the “3+1+1” integrated undergraduate-to-master’s training model, deepen efforts in curriculum alignment, credit recognition, and joint thesis supervision, and comprehensively enhance the appeal of cooperative programs and the quality of talent cultivation.

Moving forward, the college will remain focused on the core objective of internationalization, ensure the thorough implementation of all tasks, accelerate the completion of pending initiatives, continuously deepen international exchanges and cooperation, diversify exchange program formats, and improve the service support system. We are committed to elevating student exchange programs, faculty visits, and research collaboration to new heights. Through high-level internationalization, we aim to cultivate more high-caliber professionals with a global perspective and a sense of national pride, thereby injecting strong momentum into the high-quality development of the college’s educational endeavors.
